The purpose of this program is to educate and work with employers to promote seat belt usage by employees both on and off the job. The average economic cost per crash causing an incapacitating injury is $60,500.
When used, lap/shoulder safety belts reduce the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants by 45% and reduce the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50%. Safety belts saved an estimated 15,632 lives in 2005 among passenger vehicle occupants over 4 years old. An additional 5,328 lives could have been saved in 2005 if all passenger vehicle occupants over age 4 wore safety belts. From 1975 through 2005, an estimated 211,128 lives were saved by safety belts. (National Safety Council’s 2007 Injury Facts)
