IOWA-ILLINOIS SAFETY COUNCIL'S BELT AMERICA PROGRAM

The purpose of this program is to educate and work with employers to promote seat belt usage by employees both on and off the job. The average economic cost per crash causing an incapacitating injury is $62,500.

When used, lap/shoulder safety belts reduce the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants by 45% and reduce the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50%. Safety belts saved an estimated 15,383 lives in 2006 among passenger vehicle occupants over 4 years old. An additional 5,441 lives could have been saved in 2006 if all passenger vehicle occupants over age 4 wore safety belts. From 1975 through 2006, an estimated 226,567 lives were saved by safety belts. (National Safety Council’s 2008 Injury Facts)

Higher seat belt usage by employees can reduce costs as well as prevent deaths and injuries.

What we can do to help you achieve the goal of higher seat belt usage:

This program can easily be expanded to the families to show that you are interested in their safety not only
on the job but also off the job and that you are interested in the safety of their families.

Testimonials:

"Al Perkins from the Iowa Illinois Safety Council made a compelling case for seatbelt use.  His experiences in accident investigation brought a high level of realism to our safety meeting.  The presentation really made people stop and think about the importance of properly using seatbelts every time in every seat of the car.

Al helped us to realize how many lives are lost needlessly each year in accidents that could be survivable just because people choose not to buckle up."

-Ron Cook - Manufacturing Engineer/Safety Administrator
Roto-Rooter Corporation, West Des Moines, IA

“Recently, Al Perkins visited several of our company locations to give a presentation on safe driving. I can honestly say that it was one of the most well-received safety presentations by a guest speaker that CIPCO has ever had. The presentation was very educational and Mr. Perkins was engaging, informative, and witty throughout his discussion points. I received several positive comments from employees following each presentation. I’m certain that we’ll be inviting Mr. Perkins to speak to us again in the future.”

-Rex Butler - Manager, Environmental & Safety
Central Iowa Power Cooperative, Cedar Rapids, IA
