About the class

A great safety manager has the ability to lead and influence safetyand health efforts in an organization.

This course takes a balanced approach to safety management, addressing administrative, technical and cultural elements. You'll learn how to build your role as a safety leader in your organization, and mentor others. This course will walk you through case studies, discussions, and activities that will help you effectively manage both projects and employees. After completing this course you will receive 3.0 CEUs toward your ADVANCED SAFETY CERTIFICATE (ASC).

Exercises during the class will require use of a laptop. If you do not have a laptop available for your use, please let us know in advance and we will try to accomodate your needs.

What You Will Learn

The Safety Management Techniques course is designed to assist safety and health professionals who are responsible for managing employees and/or projects in safety and health efforts. Based on current safety, management, quality, and performance technology principles, this program focuses on knowledge and skills required to effectively deal with safety and health management issues from an individual and organizational perspective.

During the four and a half day course, safety and health systems and organizational structure; work processes and practices; and the needs of and relationships with employees will be explored. The scope, function, and leadership role of the safety and health practitioner are emphasized in exploring these areas.

Participants will:

  • Analyze problems presented through case studies.
  • Practice skills in role play situations.
  • Share management techniques with other safety and health professionals in group discussions.
  • Create a management plan for their company/facility.

The Advanced Safety Certificateprogram is designed to maximize your effectiveness as a safety leader and help you establish best safety practices for your organization. Advanced courses focus on the technical and management safety skills and best practices needed to take your safety program to a new level. And with each course, you'll be stepping out on a path toward greater accomplishment and professional recognition.To attain the Advanced Safety Certificate, you must complete the Principles of Occupational Safety and Health course and a minimum of 5.4 CEU's among the approved classes.

Cancellation without penalty may be made up to five working days prior to the seminar date.  Cancellation after that date will be charged 50% of the fee.  You may avoid this charge by transferring your registration to another person.  Registrants who do not cancel are liable for the entire fee.  ALL REFUNDS WILL BE IN THE FORM OF A CREDIT VOUCHER.  This cancellation policy is standard with all Iowa-Illinois Safety Council sponsored programs.

About The Trainers

Bryan Doty

Bryan DotyProgram Developement & Training Coordinator • Iowa-Illinois Safety Council
Bryan has been involved in manufacturing for nearly 20 years, serving on safety teams and safety committees for 15 years and 5 years as a safety coordinator for a window manufacturer. He has 3 years experience in the construction industry as a safety consultant.

Bryan is an authorized OSHA Training Institute Construction Outreach Trainer. He has the National Safety Council Advanced Safety Certificate and holds a certificate in Industrial Ergonomics. His experience and diverse background gives Bryan the ability to serve in the field as well as the classroom to help bring solutions to safety problems.

Jim Silvers

Trainer/Consultant • Iowa-Illinois Safety Council
Jim is identifiably qualified as an occupational safety and health trainer by several years of experience. He has 19 years of manufacturing experience, 4.5 years in the chemical industry. He also has 8.5 years of conducting on-site inspections across the country.

Jim has an extensive background in OSHA compliance and more specifically Hazard Assessment, Lockout Tagout, Confined Spaces, Hazwoper, Machine Guarding, Safe Lifting, and Emergency Response, which includes First Aid, CPR, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens.
